My goal as a writer, broadly speaking, is to write about how we live in America, and how we came to live this way, with all the ridiculousities, absurdities, and vexations that our lives entail. I'm the author of two books: That Demon Life, a novel, and Long Time Ago Good, a story collection. My work has been published in two dozen or so journals, including Callaloo, Iron Horse Literary Review, and Short Story, and I'm a former winner of the Dobie-Paisano Fellowship, awarded by the University of Texas at Austin and the Texas Institute of Letters. I lived in Austin, Texas, for 25 years, at various times making my living working as a cab driver, as a shade tree salesman, and as an Internal Revenue Service bureaucrat. I'm currently Artist-in-Residence at Federal Prison Camp Bryan, and I'm also a Lecturer at Texas A&M University, where I teach literature, creative writing, and freshman composition.

On this website you’ll find:

* a collection of words by me and about me

* links to people and places I like
* and a blog,
Ordinary Horrors
