I'm the author of seven books: the novels Normal School and Burnt House and That Demon Life and Professed, the story collections The Messes We Make of Our Lives and Long Time Ago Good, and the writing/craft book Answers Without Questions . I'm editor of Alamo Bay Press and an instructor at Alamo Bay Writers' Workshop. My writing has been published in two dozen or so journals, including Callaloo, Iron Horse Literary Review, and Short Story, and I've won the Dobie-Paisano Fellowship, awarded by The University of Texas at Austin and the Texas Institute of Letters. I've been the National Endowment for the Arts Artist-in-Residence at the federal prison in Bryan, Texas, and I'm now Instructional Associate Professor of English at Texas A&M University. A few years back, I was happily inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters.
