My goal as a writer, broadly speaking, is to write about how we live in America, and how we came to live this way, with all the ridiculosities, absurdities, and vexations that our lives entail. I'm the author of two books: That Demon Life, a novel, and Long Time Ago Good, a story collection. My work has been published in two dozen or so journals, including Callaloo, Iron Horse Literary Review, and Short Story, and I've won the Dobie-Paisano Fellowship, awarded by the University of Texas at Austin and the Texas Institute of Letters. I lived in Austin, Texas, for 25 years, at various times making my living working as a cab driver, as a shade tree salesman, and as an Internal Revenue Service bureaucrat. I've been a lecturer at Texas A&M University, and have been the National Endowment for the Arts Artist-in-Residence at a federal prison in Bryan, Texas. I just started a position as Assistant Professor of English at Pittsburg State University, where I teach creative writing and literature
